30 students and their professors from Germany, Lithuania, Portugal, Albania and Tenerife spent a week producing concrete, pioneering proposals for five participating companies – among them the Loro Parque Foundation, which came away with suggestions ranging from solar and wind energy farms to ‘eco-games’ for park visitors, and TAGUA, examined for its desalination and deep-drilling facilities.

STARS EU Students Complete an Erasmus+ BIP Circular Economy Course at the University of La Laguna

“This type of hybrid and transnational training goes beyond providing knowledge, since it allows students to have academic experiences close to real life and contact with a productive fabric very different from the continental one, which makes this bootcamp a compressed living lab from which to enhance their abilities to face complex problems in the future.” – Prof. Rodrigo Trujillo González, Universidad de La Laguna, STARS EU Steering Committee.

Circular Economy on Tenerife? Bavarian Students Use Tenerife as a Living Lab

For the third year running, a group of Master’s students from Hochschule Kempten travelled to Tenerife to study business models beyond tourism. “The Canaries offer an exceptional combination of high tech and infrastructure, and its geographic limitations are an ideal testing ground to develop unique business models for a future beyond tourism,” said Prof. Dr. Andreas Müller, who accompanied the group together with Prof. Dr. Katrin Stefan, head of the Master’s programme “Global Business Development.” The group worked closely with Prof. DI Günter Koch (Humboldt Cosmos Multiversity), Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Trujillo (Universidad de La Laguna) and Máximo Nägele Hernández (Colegio de Ingenieros, Santa Cruz).

In just one week, students visited the Coplaca/FAST banana plantation in La Orotava, the Port of Santa Cruz, the Institute of Renewable Energies, and the PIRS ecological complex in Granadilla, developing circular business ideas ranging from banana-leaf packaging to insect-based protein farming and anti-ocean-dumping incentive schemes for ships.
